Maharajah Duleep Singh’s Memorial
The trip was arranged by Mael Gael (Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Southall) on 11th September 2015. The coach had a drop-off point which was about 10 minutes walk to the Ancient House which is now a museum. Upon arrival, the first visit was to the museum which ranks as one of the best examples of an early Tudor town house. Information provided by the staff and guided tour gave insight of the museum. It was interesting to know that the Ancient House was purchased by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh about setting up a museum in the town which now has many hall and kitchen displays.
Members walked to Maharajah Duleep Singh’s statue which is based very near the museum. Surrounding park is beautiful where group pictures were taken and members sat down to have their lunch. They also had an opportunity to visit the Library where they could see pictures of Maharajah Duleep Singh and his family.
Following these visits, there was a short coach trip to Elveden Church where Maharajah Duleep Singh’s body is buried beside the grave of his wife Maharani Bamba and his son Prince Edward Albert Duleep Singh. The graves are located on the west side of the Elveden Church which is still a place of intres for Sikhs. Members also visited the church which is based in the same grounds. Group pictures were taken around the graves and in beautiful surrounding grounds. Everyone found the trip very interesting and knowledgeable.
